Agent Tool Inventory – A Tiny Ritual for Smarter Agents

Sometimes the most satisfying changes are tiny ones.

This started with Junie (JetBrains AI agent) doing work on my code. Most of the time, Junie does a great job. But occasionally, I hit a moment where Junie really shouldn’t continue:

  • It’s about to refactor something subtle.
  • Or it’s not sure which of two paths I prefer.
  • Or it thinks it knows, but I know it doesn’t.

In those moments, what I really want is simple:

Don’t guess. Ask.

I already had one tool for that: GetUserInput, a little GTK app that lets Junie pop up a window and get my typed response mid-workflow.

But then a pattern started to show up:

  • GetUserInput lives somewhere on my PATH.
  • Diff_MSBuildLog lives somewhere else.
  • dotnet_clean_and_build.sh lives somewhere else again.

Each one is useful on its own, but from Junie’s point of view, they’re just… floating tools. There was no simple way to say:

“Here’s the set of commands I consider part of our agent toolbox.”

So I decided to give Junie something new:

An Agent Tool Inventory.

The Idea: One File, Many Tools

I didn’t want a complex registry, or JSON schemas, or yet another config format.

I wanted a single file that:

  • Lives somewhere predictable, and
  • Lists the “agent tools” I care about, and
  • Is easy to update with a tiny ritual.

And I wanted the tools themselves to remain the source of truth about what they do. That means:

  • Each tool keeps its own help text.
  • The “inventory” just remembers how to ask each tool to explain itself.

On Linux, that turns into something beautifully simple.

AgentToolInventory.sh (Linux / macOS)

Create a file somewhere you like. For example:

…and you’ll see the full help text from each tool, exactly as the tool author intended.

No cropping. No extra metadata. Tools remain the single source of truth.

The Ritual: Adding a New Tool

This is my favorite part, because it collapses the whole pattern into a single tiny habit.

If I’ve just installed or written a new agent-friendly tool, say MyFancyTool, and it supports --help, I can “register” it with one line:

That’s it.

No editing a JSON file. No updating a menu. Just append a line.

Next time I, or Junie, runs AgentToolInventory.sh, MyFancyTool is now part of the inventory and will show its help with the others.

I like this because it feels like a little shell spell:

Very small, very human, very easy to remember.

How an Agent Can Use It

From Junie’s perspective, this is straightforward:

  1. When Junie wants to know what tools are available (or remind itself), it runs:
    ~/.junie/AgentToolInventory.sh
    
  2. The script prints the help for each tool.
  3. Junie can:
    • Show that output to me as a “tool catalog”, or
    • Parse it, or
    • Just treat it like documentation and “know” a bit more about each tool.

The important thing is: I don’t have to re-prompt Junie every time I add a new tool.

I only:

  • Make sure the tool is on PATH (or call it with full path in the inventory), and
  • Append that ToolName --help line.

The inventory becomes a tiny, declarative “this is our shelf of agent tools.”

A Quick Windows Sketch

The same concept works on Windows, just with a .cmd file.

Why I Like This Pattern

A few reasons this feels “right” to me:

  • Meaning stays where it belongs.
    Each tool owns its help text. The inventory just remembers how to ask.
  • It scales gently.
    You can start with three tools. If you end up with ten, the same pattern holds. If you later want a .NET program to parse and pretty-print the inventory, it can still just read that same file.
  • It’s extremely easy to teach to an agent.
    The entire “contract” for Junie is:

    • “If you want to see what tools we have, run this file.”
    • “If you see a tool you want to use, call it directly.”
  • It’s small but real.
    This isn’t a grand framework. It’s a single file and a tiny ritual. But it changes how my agent feels: less like a sealed black box, more like a partner browsing a shared shelf of tools.

Future Directions (Optional Fancy Stuff)

If I decide to take this further, I can imagine:

  • A .NET 8 AgentToolInventory executable that:
    • Reads the same file.
    • Shows a nicer menu (with numbers, filtering, etc.).
    • Outputs JSON summaries for agents that want structure.
  • A more structured format later (JSON or similar), generated from this simple list.

But I like starting with the plain version first:

Giving Agentic Tools a Voice: Introducing GetUserInput

There’s a quiet shift happening in how we work with AI assistants.

They’re no longer just responders. Increasingly, they’re acting as agents — performing multi-step workflows, using our tools, running commands, inspecting output, and deciding what to do next.

And that raises a new problem:

Sometimes an AI shouldn’t continue — it should ask.

Recently while working inside JetBrains IDE with Junie (the JetBrains AI Agent), I noticed moments where Junie really needed clarification. Continuing would have risked the wrong change. But stopping entirely also broke the workflow.

So I built a tiny tool to bridge that gap.

The Idea

Junie already has terminal access inside the IDE.

So instead of forcing Junie to cancel, restart, or guess, I gave it a new ability:

Junie can now pause, ask me a question, hear my response, and continue.

The tool is called GetUserInput.

  • Junie runs it from the terminal.
  • A GTK window pops up with a prompt.
  • I type an answer.
  • The program prints my response to stdout and exits with code 0.
  • If I cancel, it exits with 1.

That means Junie can use it mid-round without aborting the task.

All I needed to teach Junie was:

“Junie, you have a custom terminal command named GetUserInput. You can run it anytime you need clarification.”

And suddenly the workflow feels more like a conversation.

How You Can Use This Pattern

If your agent can:
✔ run a terminal
✔ read command output
✔ branch logic based on exit codes

…then you can give it a voice — a way to ask for direction instead of guessing.

Here’s the simple convention I use:

  • exit 0 → continue with the user’s text
  • exit 1 → stop or fall back

That’s it. No magic — just clean IO semantics used well.

Teaching Your Agent to Use It

I simply told Junie:

“You have a terminal command named GetUserInput. Run it whenever you need clarification, and use my answer to continue the workflow.”

And optionally:

“If the command exits with code 1, stop or fall back.”

That’s it.

Why This Matters

When an AI tool pauses and asks instead of guessing…
…the workflow becomes collaborative instead of brittle.

And that’s a direction I’m very excited about.

We’re not trying to replace agency — we’re trying to share it.

What I Mean by Tape

Tape is not a framework and not a philosophy layer.

Tape is an execution substrate — a way of structuring work so that execution can:

  • preserve state across steps

Tape assumes that execution is not finished when it begins.

Tape belongs to a larger body of work — but execution substrates should be understood before the systems that depend on them.

There’s a moment in every long-running software project where you realize something important:

You don’t just need help writing code.
You need help defending it.

That’s the moment I met Junie — the new agentic assistant inside JetBrains IDEs.

And yes, before we go further:
Junie can burn a week’s worth of credits in a day.
But sometimes… that’s exactly the point.

🎞️ Tape as the Lens

If you’ve followed my writing, you know I think in terms of Tape.

Tape is not just execution — it’s sequence with memory.
A place where intent, iteration, and correction can occur without collapsing the whole system.

Most AI assistants are good at single moves:

  • suggest a function

Junie is different.

Junie works like Tape.

  • Everything passed

Not suggested to pass.
Not assumed to pass.

Passed.

This is the difference between:

Unit tests aren’t documentation — they’re walls.
Multi-round agents know how to build them.

💸 About Those Credits (An Honest Warning)

Let’s be clear:

You can spend a shocking amount of credits very quickly.

Junie doesn’t nibble — it commits.

But here’s the tradeoff:

  • You’re not paying for words
  • You’re paying for closure
  • For loops that end
  • For invariants that hold

One afternoon of heavy agent use can replace:

  • days of manual test writing
  • weeks of future debugging
  • entire classes of regression bugs

That’s not waste.
That’s front-loading rigor.

🧠 Why This Fits My Way of Working

I like Junie instantly for the same reason I like Tape:

  • It respects sequence
  • It doesn’t pretend one step is enough
  • It understands that correctness emerges from iteration, not declaration

I still do the theory elsewhere.
I still reason symbolically.
I still care deeply about structure and meaning.

But when it’s time to harden the source,
I want an agent that stays until the job is done.

The Session Tape is simply its local, procedural form.


1. Conceptual Positioning

A Session Tape is the finite, session-bounded expression of a Late-Collapse Creativity Substrate.

Where the substrate describes:

  • conditions under which meaning collapses

  • flows of pre-structured conceptual material

  • transitions from unstable to stable representations

The Session Tape describes:

  • how an AI identifies collapse events

  • how it stores them

  • how it behaves toward this stored structure

  • how the user interacts with it

This is not a memory system.
It is not a summary system.
It is a behavioral structure that tracks emergent stability.


2. Behavioral Expectations

A correctly implemented Session Tape exhibits the following behaviors:

  • A single Tape artifact exists for the duration of the session.

  • The AI does not regenerate or fabricate its content.

  • The Tape changes only through:

  • Existing entries remain unless explicitly removed.

  • The Tape records structure, not narration.

  • The Tape layer tracks decisions, constraints, definitions, and clarified meanings.

The user can:

The AI does not interpret ambiguous requests as Tape commands.

Tape firmware does not depend on:

  • persona

3. Steps to Enable a Session Tape in an AI

Below is a clear operational process for users.
These steps describe how to prepare the model, how to activate Tape, and how to maintain stable behavior during the session.


Step 1 — Establish Shared Context

Before enabling Tape behavior, the AI must “know” or retrieve its understanding of:

  • the Late-Collapse Creativity Substrate

  • the meaning of collapse events

  • the distinction between pre-structured and stable conceptual material

Users may reference your earlier post or provide a short recap; the AI does not require full detail, only the conceptual model.


Step 2 — Deploy the Session Tape Initialization Prompt

The following prompt configures the AI’s operational behavior.

It is written as a behavioral contract:

For this session, activate its operational form: the **Session Tape**.

3. Do NOT fabricate the Tape or regenerate it from context. 
   The Tape must reflect ONLY the actual recorded updates.
4. Do NOT replace the Tape wholesale unless I explicitly request a reset.
5. When I say “Show the Tape,” display the current artifact exactly as maintained.
6. When I say “Update the Tape with ___,” integrate it into the real Tape.
7. When I say “Reset the Tape,” clear the Tape entirely.
8. Continue normal conversational behavior unless a Tape command is issued.

Acknowledge activation and standby.
        

This prompt establishes:

  • the artifact

  • the governing behaviors

  • the procedural rules

  • and the contract of authenticity


Step 3 — Begin Session Interaction

Once activated, the AI should:

  • operate normally on the conversational layer

  • detect collapse events

  • maintain the Tape artifact without performing summarization

  • avoid performing Tape-like behavior unless triggered

The user may:

  • update the Tape

  • inspect the Tape

  • reset it

  • reference decisions stored on it

The Tape does not shape surface text.
It shapes shared cognitive structure.


Step 4 — End or Reset Session

When the user ends the session or requests a reset:

  • remove the Tape

  • collapse any remaining structures if the model supports such behavior

  • optionally export or summarize the Tape if asked

The Tape should never silently persist across sessions unless the user explicitly instructs transfer.


4. Notes on Implementation Quality

Signal Integrity

A high-quality implementation preserves the Tape as a real artifact — not a hallucinated reconstruction.

Collapse Sensitivity

The AI should only treat true stabilizations as Tape candidates.

Non-Intrusion

The Tape should not interfere with natural flow.

User Primacy

The user is the regulatory authority over Tape behavior.


5. Closing

The Session Tape is a procedural interface for the deeper Tape substrate.
It offers structure without constraint, persistence without rigidity, and collaboration without overdesign.

Tape: When Reasoning Becomes a Runtime

For a long time, “Chain of Thought” (CoT) has been discussed as if it were a special trick — a way to coax better answers out of AI by encouraging it to “think step by step.”

That framing is incomplete.

What CoT really revealed was something deeper:
reasoning has structure, and when that structure is preserved, cognition becomes more reliable.

Tape is what happens when you stop treating that structure as narration…
…and start treating it as infrastructure.

Tape doesn’t replace Chain-of-Thought; it makes reasoning stateful, inspectable, and interruptible. I like to think of it as CoT² — not longer chains, but chains that know where they are.

From Explanation to Execution

Traditional CoT is retrospective.
It explains how an answer might have been reached.

Tape is prospective and operational.
It governs how reasoning unfolds, step by step, at runtime.

Instead of:

  • hidden state
  • collapsed inference
  • post-hoc rationalization

Tape introduces:

  • explicit steps
  • observable transitions
  • resumable reasoning
  • controlled mutation of state

In other words:

Tape turns reasoning into something you can watch, pause, resume, inspect, and trust.

Why Tape Feels So Natural

Once you see it, it’s obvious.

Human reasoning already works this way:

  • We hold intermediate thoughts
  • We revisit earlier assumptions
  • We abandon paths without losing the whole thread
  • We resume after interruption

Tape doesn’t invent a new cognitive model.
It respects the one we already use — and gives it a formal spine.

That’s why it feels less like a feature and more like a missing organ.

Tape and AI: A Quiet Shift

In AI systems, Tape changes the game:

  • Reasoning is no longer a black box
  • Intermediate state is no longer disposable
  • “Thinking” is no longer a single opaque leap

This matters because:

  • debugging becomes possible
  • collaboration becomes possible
  • alignment becomes inspectable
  • and failure becomes informative instead of mysterious

Tape doesn’t make systems smarter by magic.
It makes them legible, recoverable, and governable.

That’s the kind of improvement that compounds.

It doesn’t replace models.
It doesn’t promise sentience.

This week, I finalized something I’ve been quietly working on with two AI collaborators (ChatGPT + Gemini):
LOM-02: Mod.ScientificMethodKernel — a symbolic kernel for how scientific truth actually stabilizes.

Not what science believes.
But how claims earn the right to be believed.

Think of it like this:

▶ Observation isn’t neutral
▶ Instruments matter
▶ Context matters
▶ Predictions can change reality
▶ Some uncertainty never goes away — and that’s not a failure

So we built a method that:

  • tracks where failure belongs (hypothesis vs instrument vs context)
  • distinguishes exploration from evidence
  • refuses to canonize claims that dodge testing
  • allows axioms to emerge instead of being assumed
  • explicitly leaves room for “unknown unknowns” (the dark sector)

In plain terms:
truth isn’t binary — it stabilizes.

One of my favorite lines from the final header:

“This kernel governs truth-claims; it does not govern meaning, value, or care.”

Science is the foundation — not the house.
We don’t live in the concrete. We build on it.
